Permanganate

Description

The 3S colorimeter is a compact analytical instrumentation for online analysis and process monitoring. The sample to be analyzed, coming from an external reservoir or process stream is autonomously grabbed by the instrument. The analyzer uses an LED light source and a photodiode to photometrically measure the color intensity (absorbance). The absorbance is proportional to the concentration of the target chemical species (analite).

Features:

  • No reagents required
  • Dual compartment design to guarantee a complete separation between the electronics and the hydraulic section
  • Color touchscreen to show the last measured value clearly, and to set all the options and settings via an user friendly interface
  • Datalogger function with data history in graphical form and USB download
  • Automatic calibration, validation and cleaning to reduce down time and operator intervention, their frequency can be freely set by the user
  • Fully integrable in industrial automation via the analog outputs (2 x 4-20 mA channels), digital output (2 relays + ModbusRTU) and digital input (voltage free contact)

The determination ranges of the analyzer vary from 50 μg/L to 200 mg/L using the (optional) internal dilution module.

Method

Permanganate (MnO44-) is a strong oxidant used in water treatment to control taste, odors, biological growth, and to remove color, manganese and iron. In addition, it can be used to control the formation of disinfection by-products by oxidizing the organic precursors. In industrial waste treatment, it is used for odour control, toxic pollutant destruction, bio-augmentation, and grease removal. Although it is an effective treatment aid, residual permanganate is not desirable in the treated water. For this reason, dosing needs to be carefully controlled and adjusted to provide just enough to achieve treatment goals but not in excess so that no residual remains in the water. Quick and reliable dose pacing of potassium permanganate can be accomplished by monitoring its concentration in real time at a location downstream of the application point. Concentrations exceeding a predetermined threshold at the monitoring point would indicate overdosing, and therefore dosing can be adjusted accordingly. Potassium permanganate has a strong absorbance signature in the visible wavelength range. The 3S-CL analyzer can accurately detect permanganate at low concentrations. It's an affordable, low maintenance system which enables the users to confidently control permanganate feed and minimize residual in treated water.
